Mary,

I met you in Louisville when you received the Victory of Spirit, ethics award at U of L. I was so overwhelmed when I met you that I couldn't speak through my tears (The Courier-Journal took this as a fantastic photo op and a picture of you hugging me made the paper the next day). You knew in an instant that we were on the same path and took me under your wing that day and stayed in touch with me for a while. I lost touch with you along the way and have wished that I'd been better at keeping communication open. I was going through some hard times and retreated into myself. I want you to know that you made such a huge difference in my life. You inspired me to let go of my fear and advocate and educate. I know that I woke a few people up along the way :) I treasure your books and your speach from the Republican National Convention has been recommended to many over the years. You made me feel like I was not alone and that I didn't have to hide. I will forever be grateful for that. Thank you for being so brave. Julie

As always, your messages are so timely. I've been sobbing for days about the MSU gun violence tragedy. I know I can't fix this all myself, but I CAN support current students and their families, and I CAN encourage my own children to embrace peace. Thank you, Mary!
